One of America's most historic towns, Lexington, Massachusetts, boasts
a wonderful downtown area filled with delightful shops. Just two miles
from the stylish Aloft Lexington, the stretch of Massachusetts Avenue, between Clarke and Waltham Streets is particularly fetching. Beyond the pink impatiens that bloom from the charming facade of The
Crafty Yankee, a bevy of traditional New England gifts is on offer. The full range of Vera Bradley bags fills the shelves with leafy, flowery, and paisley patterns, while distinctive collections by jewelry designers like Boston-based Dawn Rizzo dazzle with sparkling crystals. Authentic regional items include simple bracelets inspired
by the shores of Cape Cod, throw blankets woven with Revolutionary era
scenes, and jams from Stonewall Kitchen.
Continuing down Massachusetts Avenue, you'll stroll by Lexington's
historic Battle Green, pay your respects to the soldier who fired the "shot heard round the world" and kick-started America's journey toward independence. Then cross the street where you can stock up on French notebooks and English datebooks at Signature Stationers. About a block down, historic Theatre Pharmacy dates from 1935. Though they're no longer in their original location, and the soda fountain was taken out long ago, the pharmacy still carries trusted brands like Caswell-Massey, Mason Pearson, and Maxwell's Apothecary.
Once you hit Waltham Street, hang a right. Tutto Italiano is the perfect place to pick up a picnic lunch. Try a little pancetta, fresh mozzarella, marinated artichokes, roasted red peppers, olive stuffed with gorgonzola, cherry peppers stuffed with provolone and prosciutto. Then swing back around to the Battle Green where you can enjoy all those delicious Italian treats in peace.
