If you think cowboy culture is confined to the United States, think again. The Calgary Stampede is the world's largest outdoor rodeo, drawing more than 1.2 million visitors to this glistening metropolis in Alberta, Canada. For ten days every July, cowboys from all over the world compete in thrilling events like bareback riding, steer wrestling, bull riding, and all kinds of displays of horsemanship. One of the most exciting events is the chuckwagon race (see video), where teams of horses pull wagons at blistering speeds around a dirt track. The thundering sound of so many horses racing by is something you won't soon forget. In addition to the rodeo events, the Calgary Stampede features music concerts, agriculture competitions, stage shows, a carnival midway, and a variety of First Nations exhibits that illustrate the art and culture of Canada's native tribes. This year's event runs from July 3 - 12, 2009 and will open with the Stampede Parade, where participants march through the streets of Calgary on a 4.5 kilometer journey to Stampede Park. It's a fitting beginning to one of Canada's largest annual events, setting the stage for a cowboy extravaganza like no other. Starwood has hotels throughout Calgary, including the luxurious Westin Calgary.
