SW Alder Street runs through the heart of one of Portland, Oregon's hottest shopping neighborhoods, the West End. With the lovely, boutique-style Westin Portland situated at the compact district's eastern boundary, you're in a perfect spot for exploring the independent design boutiques that line this area's attractive blocks.
Start off with a handcrafted coffee from Spella Caffé at the corner of Alder and 9th Street. Once fueled, continue west to number 1124, where you'll find The English Department, an adorable boutique that the brilliant designer Elizabeth Dye fills with gorgeous special occasion frocks and bridal fashions. On the next block, Flora is a "modern botanical boutique" where soap and stationary mingle with little accessories and items for the home, all "inspired by the natural world." Purchase a jar of the "Knitters Hand Balm" and a pretty handmade wristlet, and head next door to Canoe, an airy space where functional design objects from places like Japan, Italy, and Denmark fill the shelf cubbies.
Now loop up to SW Stark Street two blocks north, where at number 1028, Kenny & Zuke's Delicatessan features New York deli classics. Try a delicious pastrami Reuben or club sandwich before continuing on to SW 10th Avenue where Radish Underground is your one-stop destination for independent fashion and art. Stock up on flirty dresses, graphic T's, and a set of nautical-themed coasters then go try on a 1950s-style bikini at Frances May just around the corner on SW Washington Street. Who knew Portland was such a fabulous city for shopping? Plus the best thing about this little spree is it's all tax free. What's your favorite West End shop?
