14th Street was once part of one of the grittier areas of our nation's capital, but in the last couple of years it's become hip and happening. Lined with shops and restaurants beckoning to be explored, it's a two minute cab ride from The Westin Washington, D.C. City Center.
Cafe Saint-Ex is one of the more popular destinations, serving up an eclectic American bistro menu focused on seasonal ingredients. The downstairs bar, Gate 54, is strictly drinks and dancing; bring your iPod and you might even get to DJ awhile. Down the street, sister spot Bar Pilar focuses mostly on tapas, and offers weekly cocktail "sessions," in which you get three carefully crafted cocktails and an opening and closing "taste," all for $36.
Busboys and Poets is even more multi-faceted — named in tribute to Langston Hughes, it's a restaurant, bookstore and performance space. Sample some of the city's best vegetarian food before catching a poetry slam in the back room. Or, for a more straightforward (but no less enjoyable) affair, check out Cork Wine Bar, where 50 wines by the glass pair nicely with charcuterie and more substantial, French-influenced fare.
