The history of the Gullah people is nothing short of fascinating. Descendants of West African slaves, they formed a tightly-knit community on the coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, sharing a unique language and culture that remained undiluted by contact with mainstream society. Today, efforts are being made to preserve and protect the Gullah heritage, and those curious to see what it's all about can head on over to the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration this February. All month long, the charming town of Hilton Head will host events dedicated to Gullah life, starting with an Old Fashioned Gullah Breakfast of stewed oysters, shrimp and grits, and fried fish on February 7, followed by a Gullah Arts, Crafts & Food Expo the following week. The highlight of the month just might be A Taste of Gullah, Food & Entertainment on Saturday, February 21. With live music and dance, authentic Gullah storytellers, and Gullah dishes such gumbo and conch stew, it's sure to be a party to remember.
