Orlando is so strongly identified with theme parks such as Disney World that one could be forgiven for thinking that fans of high culture will be left high and dry. But as it happens, this capital of sun, fun, and talking mice has plenty to offer the classical music aficionado. In fact, Orlando will become the center of the classical music universe this winter as the Festival of Orchestras brings some of the world's most talented classical musicians to town. This season features performances by such renowned orchestras as the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra (see video), the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic of Russia, elevating the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre in downtown Orlando to the level of Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center. Among the highlights this season is a March 8, 2009 performance by the Boston Pops, with conductor Keith Lockhart leading his musicians through a "salute to Broadway." Expect a selection of classics from the Great White Way that are grounded in symphonic repertory but at the same time tied into popular culture. Who knows, maybe a symphony based on theme parks isn't far behind. Starwood has eight Orlando properties, including the Sheraton Orlando - Downtown Hotel, just minutes from the music.
