Since 2005, the Portuguese city of Porto has been the home of the most exciting new music venue on the Iberian Peninsula. The Casa da Música provides a home for three major orchestras - the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, the Orchestra Barroca, and the Remix Ensemble - but the show begins as soon as you lay your eyes on the building itself. The white, Rem Koolhaas-designed structure looks different from every angle, sometimes resembling an upturned barn, other times seeming like a giant sandstone, and its theaters and auditoriums feature flawless acoustics and perfect sight lines. But as striking as it is, this place is serious about music. The 2008-2009 season features performances by some of the world's foremost singers and musicians, from the King's College Choir - which was created by King Henry VI in the 15th century - to Portuguese-Cape Verdian singer Lura, whose powerful African-influenced music has resonated with fans around the world. Guests at the nearby Sheraton Porto Hotel & Spa might want to take in a performance at this modern contribution to an ageless musical tradition.
