An upcoming arts festival in Weimar, Germany aims to give visitors a big taste of disaster. And that's not a bad thing, because the pèlerinages Kunstfest Weimar 2008, which will be held August 22 - September 14, 2008, is merely using disaster as a defining theme to explore through classical and contemporary art, music, dance, theater, poetry, and literature. The idea was inspired by a composition for piano by Franz Liszt entitled Unstern: Sinistre, Disastro S. 208, with artists, writers, and performers of all kinds creating works that reflect the energy, motion, and intensity of a disaster. This year, violist Tabea Zimmermann will be on hand as an artist in residence, and the Dance Media Academy for young artists will incorporate multimedia displays into dance routines that draw together the real and virtual worlds. Festival events will be held at venues throughout Weimar, so guests at the Hotel Elephant, Weimar should consult the schedule to find the disaster that's right for you.
