Comic Toronto

There must be something especially funny about Canada, because it seems to produce an inordinate amount of great comedians. Comedy legends like Jim Carrey, John Candy, Phil Hartman, and my personal favorites, the Kids in the Hall, all hail from the Great White North, so perhaps it's time for a journey to Toronto, Canada's comedy capital (Canada's actual capital is Ottawa), to see what's so hilarious. The first stop is the Second City Toronto comedy club. This offshoot of the Chicago original is a pioneer in its own right, dating back to 1973, when a young comedian named Dan Aykroyd took the stage with his oddball impersonations and physical humor. Later years produced the likes of Martin Short and Mike Myers, and today the club is still going strong with acts like Facebook of Revelations, a twisted look at contemporary Canada, and the sketch comedy group the Gents. Over at the Laugh Resort, Toronto's only independent comedy club, contemporary comics like "Tonight Show" regular Al Lubel and CTV-star Steve Levine have 'em rolling in the aisles. Yuk Yuk's comedy club is the place to go for dinner along with your jokes, just be careful not to laugh so hard that the $13.95 Chef's Fettucine comes out of your nose. The Diesel Playhouse, meanwhile, has had a big hit with Evil Dead, the Musical, so you've got another month to check it out. Toronto's downtown area is filled with all kinds of great clubs, and they're all convenient to the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Le Royal Méridien King Edward, and the Westin Harbour Castle, so wherever you go, you'll have the last laugh.
