Although using ATMs is usually the easiest and cheapest way to get cash abroad, the smart traveler can usually save a few dollars by being smart with their ATM usage. MSNBC put together a list of foreign ATM tips that we found extremely helpful. Apart from the fact that too many travelers forget to notify their banks they will be traveling overseas, one of the most important things to watch out for are the higher fees used for international access. Throughout the European Union, a US$5 charge per transaction is becoming more and more frequent—which even applies to checking your balance. Due to these fees, making larger withdrawals while abroad might be a smart idea.
