On the weekend of September 16 and 17, President George Washington's Mount Vernon estate will host a craft fair featuring historical reenactors dressed in period costume demonstrating crafts such as pottery-making (pictured) and providing entertainment and sightseeing cruises along the Potomac River. An interesting piece by the Associated Press (via The Denver Post) mentions that this year the beautiful Northern Virginia estate also has two brand-new visitors' facilities on the grounds. The Ford Orientation Center shows a new movie about Washington's life and has a miniature replica of the Mount Vernon estate, while the Donald W. Reynolds Museum features high-tech interactive displays about the man and the birth of the country, as well as Revolutionary War-era furniture, jewelry, and other artifacts being displayed at Mount Vernon for the first time. Guests at the nearby Sheraton Suites Old Town Alexandria with an interest in American history will find that, craft fair or not, Mount Vernon is a must-see and very much worth a visit.
